Future Grid FAQs

If you’ve got this far, you’re interested in what we do. We often find people have the same questions about Future Grid, so here are our answers.

Why wouldn’t I just build it myself using the Cloud?

We support the cloud. However delivering a live grid network model with smart meter data is a complex problem. We solve this out of the box as a ready to go product. Data Engineering provides the context, you can then use that data through any tools in the cloud that are required.

Why can’t SAP and other systems I have do what Future Grid does?

SAP and single-use case software providers is far more expensive than Future Grid. These systems are built for a different use case and fail to deal with the data barrier caused by lots of smart meter and DER data.

I already have network and data visualisation systems

If you prefer to visualise in GIS, Tableau or PowerBI, Data Engineering will manage the processing and transformation of the large time-series based data-sets and ensure these dashboards are fast and responsive.

What about DERMS or ADMS, where does this fit in?

DERMS and ADMS are considered point solutions to support control of specific assets. Data Engineering is needed to manage the large volumes of data real-time and determine which control action is needed. As a result our algorithms will integrate to DERMS or ADMS not replace it.

I’ve already got my own data lake project or existing database

Data Lakes much like a database or data warehouse is still an important part of the Utility ecosystem. What Data Engineering provides is a simple and automated way turn operational data in a network model for operational context and decisions. We integrate with all major database vendors.

What about Cloud native technologies like KAFKA, Hadoop, Spark etc?

No single technology provides a solution. As a result you will need to build and integrate a range of tools together to deliver a suitable Data Engineering product. You need resilience from data loss, integrations to existing systems, time-series aggregations and the ability to mix static and streaming data real time over large periods of time e.g. months to deliver the necessary algorithms.

Do you support Cloud and On-Premise?

Yes. We support On-Premise deployments and support common cloud providers including AWS, Azure and Google. We also support Kubernetes and Docker.

What if I have already built algorithms in another tools e.g. Python?

Yes we support you. Data Engineering will allow you to either write your applications directly into our platform using JavaScript, Python or R, or simply access data directly from the APIs from any language you choose.

What data do you support?

To maximise benefits through our applications we use Smart Meter Data. We support all major Smart Meter providers such as ITRON and L&G but also a range of other IoT devices including Transformer Monitors and inverters used with Battery Solar Systems.

Data Engineering can ingest data from almost any database by SQL or NoSQL and any type of flat files where customers can build their own ingestion configurations if a new type is required.
